As a protected and endangered species the Tapir or “Mountain Cow” as it is called locally, is highly regarded and is in fact Belize’s national animal.   While a sighting of a tapir crossing the road is extremely rare, these signs are a reminder that these wonderful mammals roam freely within Belize and that roads have encroached on their natural corridors.  On your next Belize vacation if you happen to drive south towards Punta Gorda town, you will pass this crossing near the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve, be sure to slow down and watch out for Belize’s national animal, especially at night!
